Color Coordination

Choosing the right colors for your bathroom can greatly enhance the decor. You can have a stimulating color scheme, to get you going in the mornings, or you can choose more subdued colors to help you relax in a hot bath at the end of the day.

There are various things you'll want to consider when choosing a color scheme for your bathroom. You'll want to consider how much you want to change the bathroom, if you want new paint, new fixtures, new flooring, or just some new towels and accessories. You'll also want to know what kind of mood you're looking for, whether you want a comforting and relaxing color scheme, or a vibrant, stimulating one. The size of the room can also be a factor.

In general, cool colors, such as blue and green tend to have a calming and relaxing effect. Warmer colors, red, yellow, peach, and such, tend to have a more stimulating effect. So, choose colors that will enhance the mood that you want. If you choose neutral colors, you have a choice of more than simply off white or cream. Neutrals come tinted with greens, blues, and many other colors. Keep a color wheel handy when you're choosing your colors. Colors that are close to each other on the color wheel will tend to have a relaxing effect, while colors that are opposite on the wheel will be more stimulating.

The size of the bathroom will be affected visually by the shade of the walls. Dark colors will make the room appear smaller and more cozy, while lighter colors will make the room appear larger and more open. When you choose a shade of paint for your walls, keep this in mind. If your bathroom is already small, and you paint the walls too dark a shade, then the bathroom may appear too small, even claustrophic.

The walls and floor are the most obvious place to start with color. Since the walls are the largest area in the bathroom, they set the tone for the rest of the bathroom. The floor, being extremely visible, is another place to start. You can find tile and other flooring materials in a wide range of colors to complement the walls.

If you don't want to repaint or put down new flooring, there are other options for color coordination, or simple accents. Your shower curtain can add a large area of color. You can choose bathroom accessories, towels, and bath mats in many different colors to accent your chosen color scheme.

By carefully choosing the colors for your bathroom decor, you can greatly enhance the mood of this room. You can go all out, and repaint, and put in a new floor. Or for a quick and inexpensive change to your bathroom, you can simply replace your bathroom accessories, and linens.
